Trainers discussing Adobe and other software products

A student in a Camtasia class of mine recently asked about how to insert a SWF into Dreamweaver for accessibility.

Here is how you do it in Dreamweaver CS5, but it should be exactly the same in Dreamweaver CS4 and CS3.

  1. On the Insert tab, select Common.
    Insert > Common
  2. Under Media, select SWF.
  3. Find and select your Camtasia-produced .SWF video.
    Your SWF Video
  4. Click Yes to make sure the .SWF video is inside of the root folder of the website.
    SWF in Root Folder
  5. Add accessibility attributes.

A grey Flash square should appear in the Design view: this is your video. It should play when you preview it and when you upload it online.

I’d love to hear from anyone who this may have helped, so feel free to comment!

  1. I opened DW and got the grayed area for my banner and other swf flash components: the message from DW is some INetEx browsers may not play my swf correctly and to enter/change code? But I’m not certain it’s necessary to bother: Flash 10.1 is available for IPhone Safari, but whose going to pay $30 to get
it on their IPs… No one else is not seeing my
flash on their browsers?! My site was written in
a previous DW (3-4) and the software I just bought from Dell is CS5, Flash Builder 4. If you have any suggestions?

  2. Hello TYF,

First of all, thank you for reading our blogs! I really appreciate it.

To answer your question, I’ve never heard of an “INetEx” browser, unless that’s an abbreviation for “Internet Explorer” (usually abbreviated “IE”). If that’s the case, I’d say the warning can probably be ignored, since the Flash code that Dreamweaver inserts for you should work universally for any Flash-enabled browser (which most browsers are, IE included). If you really want to make sure if it will work in IE, however, you can preview your webpage in various different browsers, Internet Explorer being one of them. To preview it in Internet Explorer, do the following:

    1. In Dreamweaver, in the menu bar on the top, go to File > Preview in Browser > IExplore. It should open up the page in an IE window, and your SWF should appear.

Let me know if this helps you!

  3. I sometimes write the code in HTML, it works the same way. But seldom would it fit all browsers well.

I still wonder if there is a perfect html code to embed flash in webpage.

  4. i cannot preview piecemaker.swf file of my webpage in chrome….i’m using Dreamweaver CS5, i’m getting error :Unable to find the plugin that handles this media type. Dreamweaver looks in both the “Configurations/Plugins” folder, and the plugins folder for each of your installed browsers., i hav also installed both new versions of flash and shockwave players….please help

  5. Try dragging and dropping the .swf file from the Files-Asstes panel right onto the page. Also, make sure you are dragging the .swf and not the .fla. Save and run the page. Let me know if you still don’t see it or get an error.

  6. I found two problems with SWF files in DW CS4.
    1) I imported HTML with SWF files from DW8 to DW CS4 in a new computer. They’re working very well. Although every time I open the program (DWCS4) there’s a window saying that they will not work properly. No, they work perfect.
    2) As CS4 doesn’t have a way to do slideshows directly, I tried to do it in Fireworks CS4. Or in other programs. But, every time I’m inserting those new SFW, and clicking on “play”, it appears a message saying: “Unable to find the plugin that handles this media type. Dreamweaver looks in both the “Configurations/Plugins” folder, and the plugins folder for each of your installed browsers…”
On the other hand, I have a weird message in the HTML script saying: “This object needs a newer version of Adobe Flash Player…” I don’t understand at all. I have the last one, 10.3, installed and re-installed in my new computer.
Everything was working fine in DW8, but now I’m blocked with this type of files in CS4… Some explanation you could give me?…

  7. I assume you have a site set up in Dreamweaver CS4. Please look in the files panel and make sure that all of the files are there, especially the SWF files. Then, in Design View, click once on the SWF and use the Point To FIle to point again to the swf. Save the file and run it. Does that fix it?

  8. All right. Let me tell you the news. But, before all, thanks a lot for your help. I published the file one minute ago. It works perfectly in IE9, and it works also perfect in Mozilla Firefox. It’s also visible clicking on “play” in the DW file. What is impossible is to preview my dear SWF in “preview in browser” in DW CS4. But, after all, that’s not a big deal. I can preview it in the program itself.
This is the link for the trial file I did for this:

    http://cronotecagenealogica.com/Untitled-2.html

And this is the link of the old html that I made in DW8 (which always worked with no problems) and I’m translating to Spanish.

    http://cronotecagenealogica.com/recensement_accueil.html

(It is the history of the Census of the city of Buenos Aires in 1855, which is very interesting for genealogists searching for their immigrated ancestors to Bs. As.) (I have to do the English translation now, that everything is working fine).
But, one more thing: to make it work this way I had to build the file in Windows Live Movie Maker, to convert it to SWF with Xilisoft FLV Converter, and, only in this way, I could obtain a good final result. I don’t know why, but it worked.
Thank you for your answer, and of course in retribution I will be available for anything you might need.

  9. One more question: how can I add a control bar to a SWF in Windows? Can I add some script or do I need a special program to do it? Converters are not displaying any control bar, in general. I didn’t have this problem in DW8, because it had an option to do SWF with everything: control bar, captions, etc. But in CS4 we have to import these kind of files, and all the conversions for Windows I’ve seen do not display control bars.
    Thanks for your answer.

  10. I inserted a swf file as u said, but I got a error :( I dont know how to overcome with this situation.

    error is..,
Adobe Flash player has stopped a potentially unsafe operation.
The following local application on your computer or network.
    c:/user\Harshani\Desktop\site\Scripts\expressInstall.swf
is try to communicated with this Internet -enabled location:
    fpdownload.macromedia.com

to let this application communicate with the Internet, click settings. You must restart the application after changing your settings.

what I have to do with settings???

    pls help me.

  11. hi, i’m doing a site and the SWF doesn’t work in IE, works in chrome and opera ande the others, but not in IE, i did like u did, but it doesn’t work

  13. I recently embedded a swf file in DW8 and can preview it in IE and Firefox, but when I publish it, it does not show. All files are in the right directories and up on the server. Can someone help?
